JDM Engine Shipping Explained: What to Expect From Order to Delivery

Buying a JDM engine online means trusting that a 400–600 lb precision-machined component will arrive safely at your door. Understanding how the shipping process works — from how engines are packaged to what happens when the freight truck shows up — helps you receive your engine correctly and protect yourself if something goes wrong in transit. This guide walks you through the full process.

How engines are packaged for freight shipping

Engines are shipped as LTL (less-than-truckload) freight, not as standard parcel packages. They're too heavy for UPS/FedEx ground services and need to be palletized or crated for safe freight movement. At JDM New York, engines are:

  • Drained of fluids before shipping (required by freight carriers for safety)
  • Wrapped and secured to a pallet or crate to prevent movement in transit
  • Labeled clearly with your delivery address and any special handling requirements

An engine should not arrive loose in a box. If it does, that's a packaging quality problem worth noting in your receipt documentation.

Transit time and tracking

Freight transit times are longer than parcel transit times. For nationwide shipping within the continental U.S., expect approximately 3–7 business days depending on origin/destination and carrier routing. We provide tracking information when the engine ships so you can monitor the freight movement. Freight tracking is less granular than Amazon-style parcel tracking — you'll see terminal scans rather than hourly updates.

Delivery: what to do when the truck arrives

This is the most important part of the receiving process. Follow these steps every time:

  1. Inspect the shipment before signing anything. Don't let the driver rush you. You have the right to inspect the pallet/crate before signing the delivery receipt.
  2. Look for damage to the outer packaging. Crushed corners, torn wrapping, or a visibly damaged pallet are red flags. Note them.
  3. If you see damage, note it on the delivery receipt before signing. Write specifically what you see: "pallet corner damaged," "crate lid displaced," etc. A signed receipt with no exceptions is treated as acceptance in good condition by the carrier.
  4. Take photos of the packaging before you open it. Document the condition at receipt, even if it looks fine externally.
  5. Open and inspect the engine as soon as possible after delivery. Most freight claims have very short windows (sometimes 24–48 hours) for concealed damage claims after delivery.

What "nationwide shipping" means in practice

JDM New York ships to all 48 contiguous states. Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories may require a shipping quote; contact us before ordering if you're outside the contiguous 48. For dealers or shops ordering multiple engines, contact us directly for freight arrangements on larger orders.

What to do after the engine arrives

Once you confirm the engine arrived in good physical condition:

  • Store it in a dry, covered location if you're not installing immediately
  • Don't allow it to sit exposed to the elements; moisture in the cylinders from prolonged open-air storage can cause issues
  • Have a plan for installation timing; an engine sitting on the floor of a garage for months is not the same as one going into the car within a few weeks

For what to do when you're ready to install, see our installation checklist and break-in guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick up the engine instead of having it shipped?

Contact us to arrange; local pickup may be possible depending on your location relative to our inventory. Shipping is the standard fulfillment method but we can discuss alternatives.

What if the engine arrives damaged?

Document everything at receipt (photos of the packaging before and after opening) and contact us immediately. Freight damage claims require documentation from the point of delivery — the more you document at receipt, the smoother the resolution process.

Is shipping included in the listed price?

Check the product listing for the specific engine you're ordering. Shipping terms (included vs. quoted separately) vary; we indicate this clearly on each listing.
