Honda's K-series is the most-swapped modern four-cylinder engine family on the planet — and the two codes you'll see most often are the K20A and the K24A. They share the same block architecture and bolt pattern, but they're meaningfully different engines with different strengths. Here's how to pick the right one for your build. This post is part of our JDM engine codes guide.
The short version
- The K20A is a 2.0L, shorter stroke, higher-revving engine — the choice for builds that prioritize peak power and top-end response.
- The K24A is a 2.4L, longer stroke, with more torque throughout the rev range — the choice for street builds, daily drivers, and the Honda CR-V/Accord replacement market.
Displacement and architecture
| Spec | K20A | K24A |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 2.0L | 2.4L |
| Bore × Stroke | 86 × 86mm (square) | 87 × 99mm (long stroke) |
| Valvetrain | DOHC i-VTEC | DOHC i-VTEC |
| Compression | 11.0:1 (Type R spec) | 9.7–10.5:1 (varies by sub-code) |
| Power character | High-revving, top-end focused | Broader torque, mid-range pull |
Factory output figures
Output varies significantly by sub-code. The JDM Integra Type R K20A is the benchmark for the 2.0L: around 220hp at 8,000 rpm with the high-compression head and individual throttle body inlet. The K24A in most applications targets 160–200hp depending on tune — but with more usable torque below 5,000 rpm for street driving. These figures are from factory documentation; your actual numbers depend on which specific sub-variant you're buying.
Which vehicles used each code?
K20A applications: JDM Civic Type R (EP3, FD2), JDM Integra Type R (DC5), Honda Stream, Honda Step Wagon. The K20A2 (USDM) went into the Acura RSX Type-S.
K24A applications: Honda CR-V (2002–2009), Honda Accord (2003–2007), Honda Element, Acura TSX. The K24A2 in particular is a popular upgrade core for Type-S builds.
Swap compatibility between K20 and K24
Because the K20 and K24 share the same block architecture and bell housing bolt pattern, many K-series swaps can use either engine in the same chassis with the same mounts. The most common pairing is dropping a K20A head onto a K24 block — the "K24/K20 hybrid" or "frankentour" build — which combines the K24's displacement and torque with the K20A Type R head's higher-flowing ports and VTEC profile. This is a genuine builder's option, not just internet mythology.
Current pricing from our inventory
Based on our current stock: K20A engines typically run $749–$1,749 (median ~$749), while K24A engines run $849–$1,749 (median ~$1,099). The slightly lower K20A median reflects that high-output K20A Type R-spec units are rarer and command a separate premium above those figures. See our full cost guide for more context on what drives pricing.
Which should you choose?
- Choose K20A if: you're building for peak power in a naturally aspirated setup, you want the Type R head, or you're targeting a high-revving track/sport build.
- Choose K24A if: you're doing a factory replacement in a CR-V or Accord, want more street torque, or are building a K24/K20 hybrid and need the long-deck block.
- Choose neither if: you're going forced induction — at that point the base engine choice matters less than the supporting parts and tune.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a K20A head on a K24 block?
Yes — this is a well-documented build that requires matching the correct VTEC solenoid wiring and potentially adjusting your tune for the cam profile change. Many shops that specialize in K-series work build these regularly.
Is the K20A better than the K24A for a daily driver?
Generally no — the K24A's broader torque curve makes it more livable in traffic, and it doesn't require you to rev to 8,000 rpm to access peak power. The K20A Type R spec is more demanding to drive fast and rewards a higher-revving driving style.
Which is more common in JDM imports?
The K24A is more abundant in the JDM import market simply because it came in more mainstream models (CR-V, Accord) that were produced in higher numbers than the Type R-spec K20A platforms.
